In FY22 PlanBornefondens programmes in Benin have reached:
We have worked with 4 partners, who are funded by PlanBornefonden and 113 partners, who are not funded by us, but whom we work with on the programmes.
Since 1994 Plan International has been working in Benin to improve the lives of children. Benin has a population of 12 million people1 and of those, almost 20% are living under the absolute poverty line2, which is just $1.90 per day3.
Almost half of the population live in urban areas4, and 60% of the urban population live in the slums. Here high levels of violence and crime, poverty and social exclusion are common occurrences5.
One of country’s issues is the infant mortality, which is extremely high due to diseases, that are preventable. In Denmark 3 in 1000 born children die before they turn one. In Benin the number is 57 in 10006. Another important issue is the young population, seeing as 62% of the population is under 25 years of age. However, many young people are either unemployed or working poor, which makes it hard for them to support themselves and their families and furthermore, impossible to rise above the poverty line.
